The Thomas Edison National Historical Park in West Orange, New Jersey is a spectacular monument to the dawn of modern innovation. Spanning over two interconnected historic sites, this park preserves the revolutionary laboratory complex where Thomas Edison spent his final 44 years shaping the modern world alongside Glenmont, his elegant 29-room Queen Anne estate.

30 Minute interior estate tour of the 1st and 2nd floors following the Laboratory Tour

As one group tours the inside of the estate, the other group may tour the exterior grounds. Self-guided tours of the exterior grounds with audio are available here.
To begin, you will step into a massive industrial complex where Edison and his team pioneered the commercialization of breakthroughs that transformed daily life. The shop is a multi-tiered machine shop and heavy machinery lab. The research library served as Edison’s personal command center. Inside the home, visitors are offered an intimate glimpse into the inventor’s private family life. You will then see how Thomas and his family lived and where they entertained guests.
Additional Information
The Thomas Edison Museum (West Orange site) is part of the National Park Passes Program and accepts America the Beautiful Passes. If you have this pass, please register as a pass holder during the checkout process.
Visitors start at the Visitor’s Center in Building 1 which includes the park orientation film and museum store.
The Main Laboratory is Building 5 includes Thomas Edison’s library, machine shops, music room, and other exhibits.
The Chemistry Laboratory is open as staffing allows. Patterson Shop and Blacksmith Shops are available to look in. Edison’s film studio, the “Black Maria”, is a full scale replica.
Glenmont is not fully accessible
Everyone MUST enter through the Visitor’s Center and have a park entry pass in order to obtain the pass for the Glenmont Estate.
Free parking is available in the dedicated lot directly across the street from the Laboratory Complex on Main Street.
